Megumi Yonezawa is from Hokkaido, Japan. She began studying classical piano at the age of six. She graduated from Berklee College of Music with a Bachelor of Music degree. During her time at Berklee, she pursued dual majors in Performance and Jazz Composition.
Megumi is a recipient of numerous prestigious awards such as the Jazz Performance Award, Clare Fisher Award and the Techniques Endowed Scholarship. After her graduation from Berklee, Megumi received a scholarship from Japan as a trainee of the Hokkaido Cultural Foundation’s Overseas Artist Training. With her scholarship, she had the opportunity to further her research of Jazz in the United States.
Megumi received a recommendation from Jason Moran (Blue Note Recording Artist) and became the regular pianist for the brilliant saxophonist, Greg Osby (Blue Note Recording Artist). She acquired countless performance experiences while playing piano for Greg Osby and his band. She had the opportunity to perform in legendary venues such as the Village Vanguard, Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall, Birdland, the Jazz Standard, Symphony Space, Blues Alley, Cornelia Street Cafe and famed Jazz festivals like the Montreal Jazz Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival, Umbria Jazz Festival and many others.
Megumi has recording experiences with Greg Osby and renowned Jazz artists such as Nicholas Payton, Robert Hurst, Rodney Green and Joan Osborne on the album titled, “Public" (Blue Note Records).
Megumi has appeared on other projects as a sideman, also. She performed with Meg Okura’s Pan Asian Chamber Jazz Ensemble on the 2006 recording of the same name and with vibraphonist Mike Pinto’s group “Little Green Men," a group that released their first album on Steeplechase Records in 2010. In addition, she played with Fresh Sound Recording Artist, Jostein Gulbrandsen’s group alongside Grammy Award-winning bassist Phil Palombi and former Jean-Luc Ponty sideman, Thierry Arpino.
Megumi was also the Artist-in-Residence at Wildacres in North Carolina in 2010 and 2011.
Since Megumi has been in the United States, she has played with Greg Osby, Dave Liebman, George Garzone, Sam Newsome, Nicholas Payton, Ambrose Akinmusire, Robert Hurst, Ben Williams, Mike Moreno and many others.
Megumi has now released her debut album as a leader titled "A Result of the Colors" on Fresh Sound New Talent, with John Hébert on bass and Eric McPherson on drums. It is set in the trio format which performs Megumi’s original compositions and one cover. The music is creative, emotional and powerful.
