Penfield Rotary Big Band

Penfield Rotary Big Band
The Penfield Rotary Big Band was formed in 1954 as a "pit" band for the Penfield Rotary Club's annual variety show fundraiser. As the shows grew each year in size and quality, the band attracted many local professional and semi-professional musicians to its ranks. The last Rotary show was held in 1996, but the band lives on thanks to Penfield Rotarian Nelson Carman and an arrangement between the Penfield Rotary Club and the Penfield Recreation Department. Co-directed by Howard Rowe and Steve Quance, the band plays for dancing the first Tuesday night of each month at 7:30PM from September through June at the Penfield Recreation Center on Baird Road in Penfield. A wide variety of music is played and selections include charts made famous by the following groups: Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, Woody Herman, Maynard Ferguson, Count Basie, Buddy Rich, Glenn Miller, Stan Kenton, The Tonight Show Band, Gordon Goodwin and many others. They also perform as the "Starlight Orchestra" for non-Rotary related functions and have performed recently at the Stardust Ballroom and the Sodus Point Lighthouse Concert series.
