Nordic and Euro Jazz Now – now in its 13th year – will present artists from Finland, Denmark, Sweden, Faroe Islands, and Iceland.
Nordic Jazz Now at RIJF evolved via artistic director/producer John Nugent’s music connection with a great jazz friend and colleague, Ken Pickering, founder of the Vancouver International Jazz Festival in Canada.
Together, Pickering and Nugent consulted with each other and secured bookings with many artists from across northern Europe. In 2004, John had close ties with Sweden while running the Stockholm Jazz Festival and met Pickering who also shared the same desire to present the finest Nordic artists at his festival in Canada.
Over the years, more than 100 amazing groups have come to Rochester either directly from Scandinavia or via the Canadian jazz festival circuit. We've been graced with some incredible artists who have traveled to North America to share their unique take on the only truly American art form.
Since Pickering's passing in 2017, it became challenging to present an exclusive roster of Scandinavian artists each year so Nugent has engaged several European based artists thereby morphing shows at Lutheran Church of the Reformation into what we are now delighted to call Nordic and Euro Jazz Now.
