Jon Ballantyne

For more than three decades, New York area-based pianist and composer and educator Jon Ballantyne has performed to acclaim in solo, trio, quartet and big band concerts in the USA, Canada, Europe, Japan, the UK, Ireland and Israel.

Jon has released 12 albums under his own name and has garnered 2 Juno awards and 4 Juno award nominations.

Ballantyne’s early interest in jazz eventually led to studies with highly influential musicians such as Dave Holland, Richie Beirach, Joanne Brackeen, Don Thompson, Lee Konitz, Cecil Taylor, Barry Harris, Ed Blackwell and Kenny Wheeler, and at the University of North Texas, The Banff Center for the Arts and McGill University.

Jon has performed and recorded with the artists Joe Henderson, Paul Bley, The Woody Herman Thundering Herd, Dave Liebman, Dewey Redman, Roy Haynes, Billy Hart, Gene Perla, Bill Goodwin, Seamus Blake, Nicole Glover, Roxy Koss and Ingrid Jensen, to name a few.

Whether performing his original compositions, virtuosic two-handed spontaneous improvisations, or reworking jazz standards in his own innate, organic way, Jon Ballantyne’s openness, originality and inborn creativity always inform his music, much to the delight of his listeners.
